Swimming with Manatees in Crystal River: When to Go and What to Know

Florida Everglades

Crystal River, on Florida’s Gulf Coast about 90 minutes north of Tampa, is one of the few places in the world where you can swim in the wild alongside manatees. It is a gentle, unforgettable experience — and one of our favorite day trips from Tampa and Orlando.

When to go

Manatees cannot tolerate cold water. When the Gulf cools down, they move into Kings Bay, where natural springs keep the water at roughly 72°F (22°C) all year. The best months are mid-November through March; on cold mornings the numbers can be remarkable. Early-morning tours usually see the most animals and the calmest water.

How a manatee swim works

  • You join a licensed tour operator on a small boat in Kings Bay.
  • Wetsuits, masks and snorkels are provided; you float quietly at the surface.
  • A guide briefs the group and stays in the water with you.
  • Non-swimmers can stay on board and watch from the boat.

Three Sisters Springs boardwalk

During manatee season the Three Sisters Springs are closed to swimming so the animals can rest, but a boardwalk around the springs gives a clear view from above. Tickets are sold at the Three Sisters Springs Center in town; it is a lovely, easy walk for guests of every age and a good option for anyone who prefers to stay dry.

Manatee manners

Manatees are a protected species, and the rules are simple: observe passively, keep your distance, never chase, feed or give water to a manatee, and stay out of roped-off sanctuary areas. Good operators enforce this, and following it is what keeps the experience possible for future visitors.

Making a day of it

A typical AHL day combines a private morning swim charter, lunch in the historic district of Crystal River, an afternoon on the Three Sisters boardwalk and an evening return to Tampa. Because the boat is private, timing is flexible around your group.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit and towel (wetsuits are provided)
  • A change of warm clothes — winter mornings can be cool
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat
  • A waterproof phone case if you want photos
